Ishpeming Area

Snow Last 48 hrs: 2 -- Base: 1-6 Date: 1-10-03 Snow Cover on Ground in ishpeming: 1 to 6 inches In Ishpeming the snow cover is minimal. Recently we have gotten some cold weather and a little snow. To the north towards Big Bay there is an area with many forest roads and county roads with around a foot of snow. Snow cover can vary widely though. Area Conditions: Currently:Trails have a light snowcover--1-4 inches and are frozen. There are still exposed areas though with rocks and stumps. So leaving from Ishpeming and heading North go slowly. Heading North of Ishpeming towards Big Bay will bring you to some fair to good riding areas that have decent snow cover (around a foot to a foot & 1/2). The snow in this area is frozen snow and it consists of mostly county roads and wooded state land, but it is very rideable and in ³fair to good² shape. Also, around trail 14 in Big Bay the trail is in decent shape too. NOTE****Big Bay got over a foot of fresh snow last night....riding should be real good.....****** Locally:Trails are not being groomed yet and wont be opened until we get some good snowstorms. Trails right now are rideable but with caution. We just got a light amount of snow and more is expected in the next few days. Recommended Rides: With the current snow situation on the trails we are recommending that snowmobilers head to the north and ride in the woods between Ishpeming and Big Bay. Also, trail 14 is very rideable. In that area you will find snow covered wooded areas, county roads, etc.. all accessible by snowmobile . You will find around a foot of snow in the woods and less on the county roads. This is not a bad option for riding right now as options are limited. In this area you will find several hundred miles of potential riding. Detailed maps with instructions on how to get to these spots is available at both Ishpeming Best Western hotels. Just ask at the front desk. Weather: Forecast also calls for additional snow for the weekend, so maybe we will soon have a base again.. www.ishpemingtrails.com To be added to my trail report list: cvmarketing@skyenet.net Events:December 1st: Season opens. Snow Last 48 hrs: 12-18 inches (+) -- Base: 8 inches or better We hear the trails are fair to good. There is at least a 2-3 inch icy base and we have seen a womping of snow the last few days. Unbelievable. The forecast through the next week is temps in the teens to 20s and snow snow snow. Every day there is snow coming. Monday the weather channel is forecasting another 10 - 12 inches during the day and 3-6 monday night. Because of the wind, the trails in the open areas are lacking the fresh snow on top, but still have an icy base. The trails in the woods are good. ADDITIONAL AREA REPORTS MANELONA CHAMBER - January 10 Current trail conditions: There is no trail base. Snowfall today has been approximately 2-3 inches. The Mancelona area is currently under a winter storm watch through Friday night with possible accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. The current weather forecast through January 18th includes some snowshowers almost every day throughout this period ranging from light to flurries. Snow Last 48 hrs: 4 inches -- Base: 10 inches plus on ground, 5 inches to 12 inches for base TASA SOUTH TRAIL INFO TO FOLLOW IN TRAIL SECTION.... As a reminder, PLEASE remember that I've told everyone before that I will update between 8-9 or possibly 9:30 a.m. (on a rare occasion it COULD be later) I should have everyone's info by 9:00 and be able to give you an up to date report. I do enjoy talking with you on the phone and getting your e-mails, but just because I haven't gotten an update posted by 8:05 a.m. doesn't mean it isn't coming. I won't be able to give you any more current info by the phone or e-mail at 8:05 if I haven't gotten my snowflakes in a row yet. Thanks for your patience! :-) (Also, lately our ISP has been having problems so that can always cause a delay too. I WILL get the info to you somehow if that does happen.) Temp this a.m. is 14* and wind chill is about 8*. Picked up about another 4 inches during the night. Temps are to remain cold, not as windy and snow in the forecast every day till Tuesday. It is snowing lightly. Snow has settled considerably during the past 12 hours so it doesn't look like we actually got as much as we did. The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the most tempting moment. TASA (Newberry trail system): North trails were groomed last night and reported in very good condition (lots of sleds). This DOES include the trail out of town by Timber Charlie's. SOUTH TRAIL WAS GROOMED TO TROUT LAKE AND CUT RIVER. SNOW IS SCANT IN PLACES FURTHER SOUTH, BUT TRAIL IS IN GOOD SHAPE. We had about 14 people check out this a.m. and everyone of them had nothing but good things to say about the trails....except the wait for gas in Grand Marais, but to me that is a good indication of how many people are on the trails and they held up! 4-Mile trail: Trail was groomed yesterday, but it still rough. Stay on the trail; why some are trying to go out in the swamps is beyond me. Please remember this is not a TASA maintained trail; it is privately maintained. (more info on message board about trail) PARADISE: Paradise is reporting 14" of fresh snow. The Groomers will be out and getting the Trails all in shape. The Paradise/Raco/Hulbert Trails should be in Excellent Condition now. The "Black Creek Swamp" would be passable except for the fact that the bridge over the Creek was damaged by a group of 4 wheelers deciding to use Snowmobile Trails for fun. Will try to re-deck it as soon as possible. The other Trails: Paradise/ Tahquamenon, Paradise/Pine Stump, Birch Hill and Whitefish Point are all in Good to Excellent Condition. SENEY: Accumulation in town is up to 12² in the last 24 hours and it is still snowing. Trails are in excellent condition and being groomed daily. GRAND MARAIS: BASE: 8-10" hard packed PAST 36 Hrs: 12 to 16" fresh snow, high winds CONDITION: "Awesome" "Smooth as a sidewalk" "Excellent" The worst of the storm has passed and Grand Marais didn't get near as much snow as predicted. Since Thursday night, we received accumulations of 12 to 16" outside of town and 5 or 6" in town with additional accumulation predicted every day this week. The groomers report the trails to be like sidewalks, flat, smooth and well covered. Trail #8 from the National Park into town along H-58 and through Woodland Park is very rough. (Complete Report) |

Snow Last 48 hrs: 6 - 6 -- Base: 4 It's snowed overnight and it is still snowing now (Saturday morning). The lake effect snow Friday night was a bit better than Thursday. We've now gotten over 6 inches in the last 48 hours. Trails are now ridable, though overall conditions are going to vary. Temps are suppose to remain in the teens and low twenties so if we continue to get the lake effect snow conditions should improve daily. Base: It continues to snow and it's a blustery day... Varying amounts of snow has fallen throughout our Big Snow Country...there's still blowing and drifting. Ironwood has about 5 to 8" of new snow. Lake Gogebic reports about 10-16" new, Porkies has had about 5" and the Ontonagon area received about 10" so far. In Watersmeet, they received 3" of new snow, Bruce Crossing about 8" now and in Mass City, 8-10" of new snow has fallen. Snow continues at all locations and is forecast daily through next week. Gogebic Range Trail Authority says all groomers are out and have groomed Trail 2 to Wakefield and over to Marenisco, they will groom 2 again today, and then 8 & 11 north. 11 south has been groomed about half-way to Winchester. Grooming continues today & tonight...daily thereafter Conditions will be fair...at this point they need more snow to be smooth...also expect some rocky areas. Lake Gogebic says all 3 groomers were out grooming all trails overnight. Because of low visibility, they will return to groom again tonight. Ontonagon groomers should be able to go out Monday...we'll confirm that for you then, Bruce Crossing groomers are out now & Watersmeet groomers are ready to go as soon as snow cover permits. Grooming is on-going in the Mass City/Rockland area. A Reminder: we've had a lot of mild weather and area lakes are not safe...ALWAYS use caution and common sense. Be sure to check with your lodging facility for updates before coming. If you need lodging referrals or any other info, call 906/932-4850. Also check out the Web Cams at www.westernup.com.
