- 1:01 pm update. - A mild weekend ahead with highs in the 30s and no snow in the forecast. Trails in the woods in the snow belts of the U.P. will likely be good with some wear from traffic. Open trails and trails into towns will likely be fair and less with thin bases from the warm weather. In Northern Lower Michigan, there may be some limited riding on trails in the woods. Otherwise not much opportunity for any serious riding. Some snow in the forecast in the middle of next week. This should help refresh the trails in the U.P. - Need a good six-inch or more snowfall in Northern Lower Michigan to get the trails going again.

- 2:01 pm update. - The weather has settled down with highs in the 30s and lows generally in the 20s for the rest of the week and the weekend. The warm-up seriously hurt the conditions in Northern Lower Michigan. You may be able to find some limited poor-to-fair riding in wooded areas. Exposed areas have thin bases and/or bare ground in spots. Conditions are much better in the snow belts of the U.P. Low temps overnight were in the 20s and groomers were able to get out on the trails in Newberry and likely in other areas across the U.P. - All areas need snow, however, generally fair to good conditions in the snow belt areas.

- 1:12 pm update. - A day of record high temperatures in Northern Lower Michigan on Tuesday - 52 degrees in Traverse City, 46 in Gaylord, 49 in Houghton Lake - has put the big hurt on the snowmobile trails. Still some snow in the woods, however open spaces are very poor to unrideable. Highs in the 30s for the rest of the week. This will perhaps preserve some of the thin base, however, there is no snow expected before the weekend. Next chance of snow is next week. A much better story in the U.P., where the temperatures did not get as high and the base is much stronger. Conditions in the snow belts should be fair to good with soft conditions in the afternoon. Not the premium conditions of last week, but trails should be holding up nicely through the weekend in most of the snow belts.
WESTERN U.P. TRAIL REPORT - 02/03/2012 - Daytime temps for the weekend remain mild with temps in the 30’s. Overnight temps will be in the 20’s so overnight grooming is being planned weather permitting. Best riding is early in the day as trails will soften up by mid-afternoon with the milder weather. Expect bare roads and parking lots due to the mild weather. ...
